All Ability Levels are Welcome!
RATs club workouts cater to of any level of athlete, whether you plan to race or not. We offer consistent weekly workouts at various locations around the Rochester area year round and provide an unparalleled opportunity for multi-sport athletes to train in a group setting, similar to that of a race. A variety of distances are offered satisfying both the novice and ironman alike.
What are SBR, RBR, and SR workouts?
Commonly known as "Brick" workouts, RATs holds weekly SBR (Swim-Bike-Run), RBR (Run-Bike-Run), and the new Aquathon (SR, Swim-Run).
New to the Sport?
You are not alone! We are a welcoming community and everyone of us started the triathlon journey somewhere. Our group workouts provide an ideal setting to begin to learn nuances of the sport from experienced triathletes at all phases. There is also a "safety in numbers" component that is important for building confidence, especially with open-water swimming and road cycling. We support each other.
When are workouts held?
Our primary locations for workouts are at Durand-Eastman Beach on Lake Ontario and Mendon Ponds Park in Pittsford. Both courses have been used for many endurance events and the Sunday SBR workout at Durand is nearly identical to the Rochester Triathlon, a race we host annually in late August. Please check the RATs schedule for weekly workouts. While the workouts listed are the planned events, individuals also improvise to meet their training plan just to be around the club. We routinely have "informal" workouts in the form of group open-water swims at Canandaigua or long bike rides around one of the Finger Lakes too. Please
There is also access to USAT Certified Triathlon Coaches if 1-on-1 coaching is preferred. Several members of the club are certified and we have an extensive referral network within the community so finding the right coaching match is easy.
Workouts are included open to official RATs members. Not yet a member, you can sign up here. As always, if you are interested in joining but would like to "try before you buy" we have a 1x drop in waiver!
2021 Covid-19 Guidelines
We follow NY State and local health directives which as of 6/1/21, allow for outdoor gatherings of up to 500 people and no mask mandates for those fully vaccinated. We do respect the right of anyone who chooses to wear or not wear a mask.

Each workout has an experienced coordinator onsite to ensure safety, bike-security, course knowledge, and etiquette. Since we are an all-volunteer organization, we ask that 1-2 members choose a workout segment per season to help out so everyone gets in a good sweat.
Yes - For liability purposes, non-members must sign a release form before the workout. We do allow 1 free workout as a non-member but respectfully ask that you join the club ($35 Annual Dues) or purchase a $10 workout pass that's good for the next week.
For more information, please contact our lead workout coordinator, Shea Coleman at shea.coleman@rochestertriathletes.com.
Yes and No. If you are looking to participate in your first one, you will find the experience to be friendly and supportive with athletes at all levels. For those seeking more competitive experience, you will not be disappointed either.
Helmets are mandatory, and drafting is illegal - we're training for a triathlon, not the Tour de France! For the SBRs, wetsuits are recommended, while a brightly colored swim cap and swim buoy are required.
We send out weekly workout emails, frequent posts on our group Facebook page, and update activities on Strava.
